New Resident Information

Welcome to Black Mountain. Here you will find useful information regarding Sanitation services.

Sanitation services are administered through the Black Mountain Public Works Department. Solid waste collection is provided for all residents living inside the city limits of Black Mountain through payment of property taxes. You are not required to "set up" an account or notify the department of change in ownership. All residents are responsible for providing their own trash and recycling containers. Types of solid waste collection include household garbage, recycling, yard waste and white goods. The Town encourages citizens to participate in the recycling program to control costs and to preserve our natural resources for future generations.

Sanitation

Residential collection of up to 2 residential style garbage cans of any size or 6 bags is provided once per week at curbside. All trash must be bagged. Loose trash inside trash cans will not be collected. Ingles style grocery bags are not an acceptable form of trash bag. Please refer to the Refuse/Recycling Collection Calendar to determine your pick up day. Each household is responsible for providing their own trash and recycling container. Trash should be placed at the curb no later than 7:00 am on your scheduled collection day. Failure to do so may result in a missed pick up.

Recycling

Recycling is collected every other week on the same day as trash pick up. Please refer to the Refuse/Recycling Collection Calendar to determine your pick up day & week. Each household is responsible for providing their own trash and recycling container. Bins/containers are not required. Recycling may be placed in blue recycling bags and sat out at the curb for pick up. Recycling should be placed at the curb no later than 7:00 am on your scheduled collection day. Failure to do so may result in a missed pick up.

Yard Waste

Yard waste is collected by request only. Once you have all your debris to the curb, you can schedule a pick up and collection will generally occur within a week. You may schedule a pick up online or by calling our office at 828-419-9300, option 4. Yard waste is defined as plant material (leaves, grass clippings, tree branches and brush, flowers and shrubbery trimmings) debris commonly thrown away in the course of maintaining yards and gardens. Brush shouldn’t exceed 6 ft in length and 3 inches in diameter. Items larger than this will need to be disposed of privately. Each week a maximum of 4 cubic yards of waste can be collected. Four cubic yards is equivalent to 6 feet long, 4 feet high and 4 feet wide. At no time will the Town be responsible for collection of yard waste produced from lot clearing or tree removal, nor any dirt, rocks, tree stumps or roots. Leaves and small debris should be bagged for pick up (compostable yard waste bags are preferred).
