Fire Prevention & Education

The Town of Black Mountain Fire Department provides fire safety education, inspections and fire investigation services. We host our annual Open House event during National Fire Prevention Week  and encourage people of all ages to attend.

Fire Causes & Risks

According to the National Fire Prevention Association the top fire causes are: Candles, Cooking, Electrical, Heating, and Smoking. The NFPA provides a wealth of free resources available for families, communities, educators and individuals on their website including free training videos and materials.

In a typical home fire, you may have as little as one to two minutes to escape safely from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Escape planning and practice can help you make the most of the time you have, giving everyone enough time to get out. Plan ahead for your escape. Make your home escape plan and practice today. Every second counts in a fire.

Note: The video on the right, provided by NFPA, is intended to convey safety messages in a light-hearted entertaining way. It is not intended for children. (Adults should play an important role in reinforcing safety messages for children.)

Classes and Demonstrations

We provide several community programs and various special events to educate residents about safety and injury prevention. The Fire Department also participates in the Annual Citizen Academy. Fire Department staff are available to assist Black Mountain residents and organizations with on-site classes and demonstrations. We currently offer CPR Certification, Fire Extinguisher training, and Slips, Trips, and Falls education. We also provide Home Safety Inspections for Black Mountain residents. If you or your organization is interested in a class or demonstration or would like to schedule a home inspection please contact us or submit a request.
