Police Chief to Retire

Known for his efforts to enhance community relationships and improve the culture within the Black Mountain Police Department, Chief Shawn Freeman is retiring next month after a 4-year career with the Town of Black Mountain.

Chief Freeman is a veteran of the United States Air Force where he served as an F-16 Falcon and F-117 Stealth Fighter Crew Chief.  He served in Desert Shield/Storm and was deployed in support of Operation Southern Watch.  After the military, Chief Freeman worked with the North Carolina Department of Corrections I.M.P.A.C.T. West Boot Camp program working with youthful offenders.   In 1999 he was offered an opportunity to work with the Morganton Department of Public Safety as a public safety officer.  At Morganton, Chief Freeman served as a patrol officer, field training officer and certified law enforcement instructor and later served in the Special Operations Division where he was assigned to community policing.

After eight plus years with Morganton, he was offered a lieutenant’s position with the Bald Head Island Police Department in 2007.  Later in 2009, the Bald Head Island Police Department and the Bald Head Island Fire Department consolidated to form the Bald Head Island Department of Public Safety where they practiced all disciplines of public safety.  Chief Freeman was promoted to Deputy Chief of the department.

 In 2014 Chief Freeman was afforded the opportunity to be the Chief of Police for the Beech Mountain Police Department where the department focused deeply on the community policing principles, enhancing the relationships between the citizens and the police department.  In May of 2017, Chief Freeman became Chief of the Black Mountain Police Department where he and the police department strive to perfect the community policing concept.
