Please consider the Swannanoa River when you choose where to wash your car!
Wastewater from car washing contains pollutants such as soap, oil, grease, heavy metals, and dirt. Excess phosphates in soapy water can decrease water quality and harm aquatic life.
Stormwater is not filtered before it runs into the river. When water enters a storm drain, it travels directly to the river.
Where should you wash your car to prevent stormwater pollution?
If washing your car at home:
- Park your car on grass or a pervious surface, e.g. pavers, so water can soak into the ground.
- Dump remaining soapy water into a sink.
If these options are not available, you can take your car to a commercial car wash where the wash water is recycled and sent to the wastewater plant for treatment.
